Mom has dementia and she has ESBL Infection, Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamase. She gets chronic UTI’s frequently. When she has a change in her levels, she gets tremors. Her urologist, and the hospital (ER) will not treat her with anitbiotics unless she has a fever. However, if she is not treated she suffers from tremors.

Anyone dealing with ESBL? and if so what is the patient taking to eliminate the symptoms?

From what I read these are enzymes that distroy antibiotics. So to me giving her antibiotics is kind of useless. I would think that her Urologist would know how to treat the ESBL which looks like has to come before treating the UTI. All I can say is to make sure they catherize her to get all the infected urine. The elderly don't void completely. Lots of water and ask if she can be given cranberry tablets.

So sorry, may not be anything you can do. From what I read its a serious condition as is the UTI if not treated.

She was taking cranberry pills to no avail. The esbl kinda rules over everything. To get the esbl to lay dormant, she needs antibiotics through IV. Once you get esbl you dont get rid of it, it lays dormant in your system. Than for some reason every so often it'll start colonizing. The doctors will not treat it unless she has a fever. And I forgot to mention, she does have a catheter, it’s changed every 4 weeks and she gets peri-care after every bowel movement. I give her 60-70oz of water a day. I’m exhausted trying to combat the tremors. I’m going in circles.
