Find Care & Housing
My heart goes out to you and his husband. Life can be cruel.
I would recommend:

* Ear phones with 'books on tape.' and/or news if he is interested in current events or Wildlife documentaries or the History channel.
Focus on other senses:

Tactile________________ Touch

* Massage:
- You could do gently and/or hire a certified massage therapist (as I am) to show you how to do that will be relaxing to him.

- You could try a mechanical massager that he can use himself or you could.

* Try play dough or something like that - he can make shapes or actual figures.

Smell - See if there is anything he can do using scent sense.

* Perhaps jars of spices for him to guess what they are.
- Then if he can ear w earphones, offer some history or origins of spices (cinnamin is very interesting).

Let me know what you decide to do / what work(ed)(s).

Thanks for your ideas, Gena. I have tried to personally respond to people's suggestions, as they have been so helpful, and I really appreciate people taking the time to think and help. I am just exhausted by now, and would like to re-start tomorrow by responding to what you wrote.

It is one of the sad things to care for someone whose physical capabilities are declining. Does he also have hearing problems? Has he had any luck with hearing aides that help him? Do large type books help? I got my mother a simple radio with knobs and kept it tuned to the kind of music she likes. She seemed to enjoy it. Can you take him for walks? Would he enjoy sitting outside (in good weather)? (Make sure he wears a hat in hot sun). Would he enjoy looking through old photo albums? Does he still enjoy food? Can you at least get him up to sit in a common area, rather than staying in bed? He may still not do much, but at least he'll have some activity around him. And don't stress too much about keeping him 'entertained.' At age 100, he's entitled to sleep and rest, if this is what he wants to do.

Everyone: thank you so much for your suggestions and going to the trouble of giving them. After we return from the holiday vacation we are taking, I am going to definitely look into many of them. Both of us are technically challenged, but I'm sure we could get help with podcasts, audio books, radio shows, headphones, etc.
My spirits have been lifted by so many ideas and possibilities.

Happy holiday and the best for the New Year to all of you and your families, and especially to the ones who drive us crazy ......
